our stories / why b-corp?

Be the change.

The world has changed. It’s not ok to use products just because they look good and smell good anymore. As consumers, we want to know the companies we’re supporting through our purchases are good – that’s why certifications like B Corp are more important than ever before. And hallelujah to that!

At Herb UK – home to OCS – we’ve been doing and making good stuff for decades. Even the hair products we made 30 years ago could stand tall in a line-up of ethical reckoning today.

  • We choose high-quality certified organic and natural ingredients over cheaper synthetics wherever possible; reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides that damage insects and destroy our soils.
  • We make everything in the UK where a high standard of working conditions and fair wages are demanded, and we only deal with ethical suppliers for our ingredient and packaging requirements.
  • We often sacrifice aesthetic beauty for recycled and recyclable packaging; although we still think we’re pretty good-looking.
  • We never have, and never will, test our products on animals or supply to countries that do.
  • We choose sustainable over readily attainable.

This is not a trend for us. It’s who we are, it’s how we began. And we strive to do better every day. Which is why joining the B Corp™ community last year meant so much to us.

“Becoming a B Corp™ is a great way to ensure Herb never rests on its laurels,” says Founder and Managing Director Raoul Perfitt. “With the pressures and fast pace of life these days it’s too easy to lose sight of your ‘why’ and get caught on a path you know isn’t right. I don’t ever want that for Herb.”

So, what exactly is a B Corp™?

Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

We recognise a broken system – where shareholder profits are placed above all else – that harms our communities and our planet. Together, B Corporations are on a mission to transform the role of business in society.

But it takes hard work, dedication and focus to create impactful change. And we need your help.

Next time you’re about to spend your money, stop and question:

  • Do I really need it?
  • Has it been made through sustainable and ethical means?
  • Am I causing anyone or anything harm by getting it?
  • Is there a better choice?

Demand transparency. Choose quality over quantity. Say no to virgin materials wherever you can. Reduce, reuse, recycle. And, most importantly, do a little bit better today than you did yesterday.

Together we can be the change our planet, and everything on it, so desperately needs.
