This month is National Hair Loss Awareness Month, but how much do you know about hair loss?
Hair loss or thinning can have huge psychological effects on both men and women so it’s important to deal with it delicately. The more you know, the better equipped you will be to deal with clients who experience it, and the better you would be able to deal with it yourself if you started experiencing symptoms.
One of the important things to know is that hair loss can be permanent or temporary; depending on the cause. It affects both men and women, although men experience a much higher degree of hair loss (notably around the temples and the vertex) than women.
Female pattern hair loss usually begins at around the age of 30 but can be earlier and it generally becomes noticeable around the age of 40.
By the age of 50, 50% of women will experience some degree of hair thinning. In women, the hair becomes thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede.
What causes it?
One of the reasons it can be so stressful is because there are so many different causes, including:
- Hormonal changes or imbalances (childbirth, menopause).
- Nutritional deficiencies.
- Stress.
- Diseases like diabetes or lupus, or medications.
- Over styling and excessive brushing, dye, bleaching.
- Ageing.
What advice should you give to someone with thinning hair?
OCS Mentor and trained Trichologist Bobbie says “reassurance, advice and education” is the key when dealing with a client who is experiencing hair loss.
